How do people manage?
“I started cycling and exercising more. I worked on my philosophy about life. I began to help others more. I became better at my own self awareness. I used all the help and tools that people gave me whenever I could.”

“I’ve had to accept that recovery is not a straight line matter – it will be up and down. I’ve been greatly helped by having access to the gym and physio assistance at my local psychiatric hospital – I attended a ladies only exercise class and the deep stretch and relaxation class is fabulous. I am trying to eat a better diet, although this has not been easy due to a lack of energy and motivation.”

“I have found positive affirmations really useful as they challenge the negative beliefs of depression. I have also tried alternative therapies such as reiki, colour therapy and reflexology. I am sure they are not the cure for everyone, but it allows me to come back to a less anxious, more rational way of thinking and believing.”
Juliet
“I open the curtains and the window to let in the air and the light. I drink lots of cold filtered water. I do a walking meditation where I breathe in for four steps and breathe out four steps. I like hypnosis CD’s and I listen to the music I like, rather than the music other people think will relax me.”

“I feel like I have a greater appreciation for the simple pleasures in life, and of the people who have supported me through my illness. I find getting plenty of sleep, taking care of my appearance and keeping my house clean and tidy very helpful in making me feel good about myself. I think it’s very important for me to develop short-term, easily achievable goals which help me to reach my longer term goals, in order to accomplish everything I want to do.”
