Media reporting of Germanwings disaster
Our heartfelt sympathies go to the families, friends, partners of the people lost in the Germanwings plane disaster on Tuesday.
A tragedy like this can stir up such so much anger and desperation for answers. But we are shocked and disappointed by the poor reporting of some the media this morning.
Journalists have been too quick to speculate about the pilots mental state. One in five of us have depression and many people , pilots included will carry on doing their jobs despite the condition. This poor reporting is simply adding to the dreadful stigma that surrounds depression. It is so often this stigma that prevents people coming forward to get help. Let’s separate the tragedy from the depression.
